Secret Boyfriend Daquiris

Wait, I think I said that wrong. The boyfriend is not a secret, but his daquiri recipe is. I’ve never really been a daquiri fan, but he does something…..special, different. I know he uses Bacardi strawberry daquiri stuff, found in the freezer at the market, which tastes very much like real strawberries, and not strawberry-flavored something. And I’m pretty sure he’s using vodka and not rum, but but I’m not sure if he’s using plain or pomegranate (or some other flavor that I’m unaware that he has.)

It’s May, and a man that can (and is willing to) mix up a warm-weather cocktail like that….well, he’s a keeper. At least for a few more months.

Trust us on this.

To Keep Your Girlish Figure

Everyone knows (or should know) that cocktails are high calorie, relative to (let’s just say) water. There’s not much you can do about the calories in the alcohol part, but recent advances in beverage science allow you to do something about the caloric content of the mixers. We’ve not sampled all of them (but we’re trying!), but here are some options:

Liquid Water Enhancers: These are concentrated flavors that you add a few drops of to water to make a flavored water. There are a bunch of brands and flavors. We’ve tried the Mio brand in blackberry/pomegranate, orange/tangerine, and black cherry. They’re not bad. Nice flavors, and they do bring some sweetness in.

Powdered Drink Mixes: Crystal Light now makes “mocktails” in magarita, mojito, and appletini flavors. We’ve tried the mojito, with Skyy ginger vodka, Canton, and lime juice. It was a little artificially clingy-sweet, but not terrible. (And ginger makes everything taste yummier anyway.)

Flavored Seltzers: Again, there are a ton of brands and flavors for this. They don’t add much in the way of sweetness, which is something to consider, but they do add a nice carbonated zing. We’ve used the black cherry, lemon/lime, and tangerine flavors in a variety of ways. Our fave of the moment: Polar Vanilla.

So go forth and try some lower cal cocktails. If you come up with anything interesting, let us know! In the meantime, the calories you save on mixers can be spent on more vodka.

Trust us on this.

Beware the Kraken!

As you may or may not know, the Kraken is an enormous mythical sea monster, said to live off the coast of Norway. It is often depicted as a giant squid-like creature. In 2007 or so, the monster was brought to life with Kraken Black Spiced Rum. We made one last cocktail in our rum-tastic evening….comprised of:

Kraken Black Spiced Rum, Domaine de Canton Ginger Liqueur, and Polar Vanilla Seltzer.

Beware the Kraken, indeed. A few of those, and you’ll feel like you’ve been dragged into the delicious briny deep.

Trust us on this.
