More Autumn Flavors

The work posse had a little impromptu soup party last night, replete with seasonally appropriate flavors.  The soups were carrot ginger, chunky potato, and a chicken-corn-jalapeno stew-type-thing, with homemade herb bread on the side.  And then homemade waffles with pumpkin ice cream for dessert. Yumminess all the way around.

For the beverage accouterments, I  made the seasonal sangria mentioned here, which several people enjoyed.  And we had ginger ale with an assortment of autumnally flavored liquors:  Buffalo Trace bourbon, Absolute pear vodka, and Kraken spiced rum.

My quaff of the evening?  1:1 Buffalo Trace & ginger ale, which was the perfect accompaniment for these soups we had….and possibly for any soup.

The Mellower Season

Autumn is the mellower season, and what we lose in flowers we more than gain in fruits.-Samuel Butler

We slipped very quickly from summer’s last glow into crisp fall weather.  And just like that (snap fingers here), we slip from elderflower season to apple season…..

The Mellower Season

  • 1 bottle (750 mL) pinot grigio
  • 1 ½ c. Stoli Salted Karamel vodka
  • 3 c. apple cider
  • 1 honeycrisp apple, chopped

Stir all liquid ingredients together with ice.  (Best made a few hours in advance.)  Decant into glasses and top with chopped apple.

I suppose, in theory, any apple will do, but the honeycrisp was particularly nice and is easy to find at this time of year.  Next time, I think we’d mull the cider with cinnamon stick or two to make it even more autumnal.
